It starts at the Glacier Discovery Centre, so it assumes you are driving the Icefields Parkway anyway.
Two situations change that. If you have no car, you need a tour that bundles the 185 km each way from Banff with the admission — the Discover Banff day trip at $274 is the cheapest that genuinely does, and at 4.8 from 430+ reviews it is also the best-reviewed of the bundled options. If you came for the glacier itself rather than the photograph, book the IceWalks guided hike at $100 instead: the Ice Explorer caps you at 20 minutes inside a roped area, and the guided walk goes well past it.

Starting from Jasper, Canmore or Calgary
From Jasper the drive is the shortest at 1¼ to 1½ hours, and the Jasper day tour with lunch at $244 includes both admissions. From Canmore, the Canmore departure at $278 does the same. From Calgary it is 3½ to 4 hours each way — a genuinely long day, and worth basing yourself closer if you can.
Moving between Jasper and Banff anyway

The headline price is often the price without the glacier. More than half the listings we checked exclude Columbia Icefield Adventure and Skywalk admission. They are still legitimate tours — they sell the drive, the guide and the park pass — but the number on the card is not the cost of your day.
One operator hides it behind a link. The highest-rated budget coach tour states its exclusion as “Book your Columbia Icefield and Skywalk tickets using this link” followed by a shortened URL, with the plain statement that tickets are not included appearing after it. Read exclusions to the end.
Buying separately is usually cheaper, but riskier. A $54 coach plus a $96 Adventure ticket is about $150, against $274 for the bundled Banff trip. The bundle’s value is certainty: your admission is already held. Buy at the counter in July or August and your preferred departure may be gone, and Ice Explorers only run every 15 to 30 minutes.
“Columbia Icefield” in the title does not mean glacier access. Several listings name the icefield, the Skywalk and the Glacier Adventure in their titles while excluding all of them from the price. The title describes the itinerary’s stops, not the tickets.
Nothing includes transport to the Discovery Centre unless it is a day tour. Both Pursuit tickets and the IceWalks hike start on site. There is no public transport to the icefield, so if you are not driving, a packaged day tour is the only way there.
